“In developing countries like Bangladesh, 26 out of every 100 women develop gestational diabetes, 65 percent of whom later develop type-2 diabetes.
International Diabetes Federation (IDF)“
Meanwhile, in developing countries like Bangladesh, 26 out of every 100 women develop gestational diabetes, 65 percent of whom later develop type-2 diabetes. More than 1.3 million people in Bangladesh are estimated to be suffering from diabetes, almost half of whom are women. The scary fact is, more than half of people with diabetes don’t know they have it.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), women with gestational diabetes and their babies are more likely to develop type-2 diabetes. Moreover, if gestational diabetes is not controlled, they are at greater risk of later developing type-2 diabetes. Experts believe that type-2 diabetes can be prevented to a large extent if planned pregnancy and gestational diabetes are kept under control.
Experts say, though preventable and completely controllable, the complications of diabetes due to ignorance are increasing the risk of complications like blindness, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and paralysis. As people of any age can develop diabetes at any point in life, doctors recommend a controlled lifestyle along with occasional blood sugar tests.
Diabetes Day and Bangladesh
The main aim of World Diabetes Day is to create public awareness about diabetes through various programs. In 1991, the International Diabetes Federation declared November 14 as World Diabetes Day. However, since 2007, World Diabetes Day has been celebrated worldwide as a day recognized by the United Nations. Bangladesh has played an important role in getting the recognition of this day as an international day. At the request of the Bangladesh Diabetic Association, the Government of Bangladesh proposed to the United Nations to observe World Diabetes Day on November 14. On December 20, 2006, the resolution was unanimously adopted by the United Nations. As a result, for the last 14 years, World Diabetes Day has been celebrated as a day of the United Nations on November 14 every year in all member states of the United Nations.
