For most of us, dreams are constant events in our lives. Some parts of a dream we can remember and some parts we can’t. Many times we think these dreams are significant and we are influenced by them. Scientists still do not fully agree on the purpose of dreams.
What is a dream?
Dreams are a sleep-induced state that we create while our bodies sleep. When we dream, we experience an alternate reality, often involving other people, places, events, and feelings. Sometimes we find ourselves doing things we never really did.
These experiences give us insight into ourselves and the world around us. Although we usually remember some of our dreams while awake, scientists say that the most vivid dreams occur during REM sleep, also known as deep sleep. During REM sleep, our brain is very active, so it is ideal for dreaming.
Most of us dream at night when we sleep. We usually dream about things that happen during the day, but sometimes our dreams are about things we didn’t even think about. Usually we don’t remember what dreams we had, but if we pay attention to our dreams, we notice something unusual. Carl Jung and others expanded on Freud’s view that dream content reflects the dreamer’s unconscious desires.
