“Many young people nowadays refer to their loved ones, girlfriends or boyfriends as ‘babu’. It is not known where it originated from. I think it has become a babu in Bengali since the practice of calling a romantic partner a baby in English.”
Nishat Parvez, a public university teacher in Bangladesh, was expressing his opinion about a song titled “Babu Khaicho”.
The song was released this month on social media Facebook and YouTube, and in a very short time it went viral.
The song titled ‘Babu Khaicho’ was first uploaded on YouTube on September 5.
After the premiere of the song, many netizens in Bangladesh took a leap.
The song has been viewed more than 20 million times on YouTube in ten days alone.
The title of this song uses the word duet, which is used by young college or university students in Bangladesh.
But why did this word pair arouse so much response among the youth? Or why such a song took place in their favorite list?
According to Nishat Parvez, mobile communication, then social media, has bridged the gap between lovers. They are able to find each other at every moment.
“Since food is also a casual subject, they may want to know whether their loved ones have eaten naturally or not, what they are doing. That is why the term ‘Babu Khaicho’ has become very popular among the youth.”
Nishat Parvez, however, said that there have been a lot of trolls on social media about ‘Babu Khaicho’However, he thinks that addressing the romantic partner, the lyrics of the song mixed with Bengali-English, as well as the video-choreography – all together, the song with this title has been able to create a stir among the young society.
Mumtaz Mumur, a student at a university in Dhaka, however, has a slightly different opinion about the song.
“Many people enjoy this kind of musicBut the kind of music that we really understand as deep or great kind of art or art is not that kind of music. “
He said this ‘many’ again does not represent everyone. A large part prefers a little loud music and DJ type songs, but again this does not apply to everyone.
The medium of entertainment is now at the fingertips of the people – on any digital platform, people can listen to any of their favorite songs effortlessly.
But now that a large section of social media activists are choosing a particular type of word in their speech, music producers seem to be moving towards a more popular culture.
Mumtaz Mumu said, “If we look at the classical music, we will see that the lyrics are beautiful, the music is also very melodic. But many young people do not appreciate this artDJ type or colorful music attracts them more – all kinds of music that creates excitement in the body, lightens the mood. “
In the last 4-5 years, some music videos have become very popular among the youth in Bangladesh, in which words or phrases used by the youth in their daily life have been used.
‘Bandhu Tui Local Bas’, ‘Ei Yeh Beain Saab’, ‘Maya O Maya Tui Apradhi Re’, ‘Maaf Kaira Den Bhai’ – these songs have gained a lot of popularity in Bangladesh on various digital platforms. These songs can be heard on the streets and in shopping malls.
Although these songs are not very much associated with the mainstream music of Bangladesh, they have been able to create a stir among the younger generation.
A big reason for this is to make fun of Kamarun Kanika.
The Dhaka-based woman told BBC Bangla, “Hate speech gets people’s attention very quickly. We think less. Whether it’s a song or a criminal type song – people don’t listen to the whole song properly, but with a line or two.” It’s fun. “
According to him, many people use words like ‘Babu Khaicho’ in their words, but some people enjoy making fun of others through these songs.

Sukant Haldar is associated with the entertainment world of Bangladesh. He thinks that the main target audience of this song is teenagers. Listening to the lyrics and music of the song, it is understood that the lyrics of the song have been written with their thoughts in mind and the music has been composed.
“I think they (Mir Maruf and Mir Brothers involved in making the song) did a very well-planned job. And that’s why there’s so much talk about the song now. They wanted the song to create such hype.”
Mr. According to Haldar, such songs, however, do not last long in terms of popularity. Two to three months after publication there was quite a discussion, then lost.
The composer of the song is a disc jockey or DJ, Mir Maruf. He said they are basically trying to sing about something trending.Just as they sang about coronavirus, quarantine, they also used a widely used word in the song, which is what lovers in Bangladesh say to the people they love.
“We want to talk about what’s going on in today’s relationship, what kind of talk.”
