Supporters of the Awami League nominee have been accused of threatening and pressuring family members to withdraw the nomination of an independent candidate in the upcoming fifth phase of UP elections. The victim, independent chairman candidate Abdul Awal, lodged a written complaint with the Upazila Election and Returning Officer on Tuesday (December 14).
According to the written complaint, the family members of Savar Upazila Union Independent Chairman candidate Abdul Awal went to their relatives’ house on Monday. On the way back from the relative’s house in the afternoon, it is time for prayers in the South Kalma area.
At that time they went to perform prayers at the house of local Akkach Ali. Later, supporters of Sohel Rana’s, the nominee for chairman of the 17-member boat, on 7 to 8 motorcycles and a microbus, surrounded the house and threatened to withdraw from the election in various ways.
Independent candidate Awal, quoting the victim Gazi Khaleda Akhter, said, “My wife left Akkasher’s house to finish her prayers and go home again.” At that time, the people nominated by the boat nominated chairman candidate Sohail showed their pistols and asked me to withdraw my nomination.
They will not be allowed to leave unless the nomination is withdrawn. They threatened that no candidate other than Awami League candidate Sohel Rana would be allowed in the union. At this time the locals came forward when they understood the matter. He said that if the crowd continues to grow, the terrorists will leave.
Awami League chairman candidate Sohail Rana was called more than once on his mobile phone but did not receive the call. Savar Upazila Executive officer (UNO) Mazharul Islam said the candidates have applied to create an environment for fair elections by taking legal action. We are committed to giving the gift of fair selection.
