A young man named Tozammel Hossain (25) has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a young woman in Rangpur. At the same time, the accused was given a fine of Rs 10,000 and two more months of imprisonment without pay.
Judge M Ali Ahmed of the Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal-3 of the District and Sessions Judge Court of Rangpur delivered the verdict on Wednesday (July 6) at noon.
Tozammel Hossain, convicted in the rape case, was convicted in court but another accused named Sanaul Islam was acquitted. The two were present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced.
Meanwhile, according to the details of the case, on June 29, 2020, Tofazzal Haq, son of the late Tofazzal Fakir of Pachgachi village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur, took a young woman from Jahangirabad village of the same upazila to Dhaka for a job. There he took her to Gazipur, not far from Dhaka, and later to Jaldhaka in Nilphamari and raped her.
The girl’s father filed a rape case against Tozammel Hossain and Sanaul Islam, a CNG driver.
After the investigation, the police filed a chargesheet against the accused. The court convicted the accused Tozammel Hossain on Wednesday afternoon and sentenced him to life imprisonment. At the same time, he was fined Rs 10,000 and imprisoned for two more months. Sanaun Islam was acquitted of the case.
Prosecutor PP Tajibur Rahman Laiju confirmed the verdict and said the plaintiff was satisfied with the verdict. On the other hand, lawyer Zakia Akhter was for the accused. He did not comment on the verdict.
