Former Facebook CEO Tim Kendall said his mission was to make Facebook as addictive as smoking. He argues that social media is just as harmful to users.
Tim Kendall testified before the US House Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee on Thursday. He accused Facebook’s algorithms of creating discrimination and emotional problems and spreading misinformation.
Kendall said: “Social media, which I and others have created for 15 years, has made people unhappy. In short, we are destroying our general consciousness. Who knows, we could be heading for a civil war.”
The US government may further impose restrictions on social media to prevent the spread of false information on Facebook. House of Representatives Consumer Protection and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Jan Šakovski said: “These big companies work for profit and power, which puts people at a disadvantage. In every country, they do their job knowing the government. The big IT companies created a division between us and started a genocide somewhere”.
