The Evros region of northeastern Greece has been ravaged by wildfires recently, the BBC says. This area of Greece is not far from the Turkish border. In addition, a hospital in the city of Alexandroupoli had to be evacuated due to wildfires.
Among the patients evacuated from the hospital were newborn babies and intensive care patients.
The media reports that fires are burning in several regions of Greece. Temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius in several places on Tuesday and wildfires are gaining momentum due to strong winds and this warm weather.
The fire is believed to have spread rapidly since Monday in the heavily forested Dadia National Park, north of Alexandroupolis. Emergency services sent messages to mobile phones in the surrounding area asking people to leave.
