On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, a massive fire broke out at the Bangabazar clothing market in Dhaka, the biggest wholesale market in Bangladesh. The fire spread to more than six buildings and a nearby residential area, destroying thousands of shops and affecting around five thousand small traders.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but some shop owners have claimed that it was pre-planned and demanded a probe into the incident. The fire service said that it had warned traders of fire hazards four years ago, but they did not take the necessary precautions. The market did not have any fire extinguishers or a fire protection system.
The fire was reported at 6:10 am, and 50 fire units were deployed to the scene. Military and Air Force helicopters also joined the firefighting efforts by showering water on the affected areas. However, the firefighters faced a challenge due to the shortage of water and had to obtain water from a nearby pond at Dhaka University. The black smoke that engulfed the area also hampered their operations.
As the fire raged on, owners and employees of the shops rushed to the scene to save their goods and move them to a safe location. They expressed their distress and anguish over losing their property and livelihoods.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is monitoring the situation closely and has coordinated the fire control and rescue operation, according to sources from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). She has also asked the authorities to identify the affected shop owners and provide them with necessary support.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Enamur Rahman said that Tk15,000 will be given to each victim of the fire as immediate aid. He also said that a decision will be taken regarding further assistance for the victims after an investigation of the incident.
The Bangabazar fire is one of the worst fire incidents in Bangladesh’s history and has left a lasting impact on the community. The authorities have promised to investigate the cause of the fire and take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
