In Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, a mother and daughter have been brutally beaten with the title ‘cow thief’. Later, they were tied with ropes around their waists and taken to the local chairman’s office. There, Chairman Miranul Islam himself beat them again. At one stage, when their physical condition deteriorated, the police came and rescued the mother and daughter and admitted them to Chakaria Hospital.
The incident took place at noon on Friday (August 21) in Paharchanda area of Harbang union in Chakaria upazila. The matter came to light on Saturday after pictures of the incident were published on social media.
The mother and daughter are currently undergoing treatment at Chakaria Hospital.
Aminul Islam, inspector of the Harbang Investigation Center of Chakaria Police Station, said, “We will send a force if the locals report to the outpost on Friday.” Our force rescued the mother and daughter in critical condition and brought them to our custody. We have arranged for their treatment.
He added that they have been charged in a case of cattle theft filed by a local person.
Asked if they had been tortured under the leadership of Harbang Union Parishad chairman Miranul Islam, he said, “No one has complained to them.” About two hundred people were present when our force went to the scene. We have given priority to bringing them into our custody from there. And if the victim or anyone else complains, we will investigate and take action. ‘
However, several eyewitnesses said that after the mother and daughter were tortured once, Harbang Union Chairman Miranul Islam sent a chowkidar (village police), tied them to a rope and brought them to his office and tortured them again. After the torture, the chairman’s men called the police and brought the mother and daughter to their deaths.
