The entire world is abuzz with the Palestine-Israel conflict. People from all walks of life have supported both sides with arguments. One such player is Anwar El Ghazi of the Netherlands. Germany club Mainz has terminated his contract for posting on social media in support of Palestine. Although he later removed the post, the club described the matter as ‘unacceptable’.
Germany Bundesliga side Mainz told Ghazi, “It is in no way acceptable to take sides on the issue of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.” The 28-year-old forward, who played for English Aston Villa and Everton, joined the club last summer. Ghazi also played three matches after joining Mainz on a free transfer.
According to Mainz, there have been discussions between the two parties regarding the cancellation of the contract, “The players and the club authorities sat down for detailed discussions before going to the final decision. Anyone may have a perspective on the ongoing Middle East conflict, we respect it. However, we have been saying that we are keeping a distance from such social media.
On the other hand, Bayern Munich fullback Noussair Mazraoui shared a video in favor of Palestine on Instagram. That’s why he was also called for a meeting by the German league champion club.
