After eggs and potatoes, the government has allowed the import of salt. For that purpose, 264 companies have been authorized to import 1 lakh tonnes of salt, said Tapan Kanti Ghosh, senior secretary of the Ministry of Commerce.
He gave this information to the journalists in a briefing organized by the Ministry of Commerce at the Secretariat on Tuesday (07 November).
Meanwhile, Tapan Kanti Ghosh also said that the prices of eggs, potatoes and onions may come down at the end of next December. He said, hopefully it will come down (price) from next month. But I hope to get good results by the end of December. We may have to be under a bit of pressure for the next month, as agricultural products do not force it to ye (production). Either produce or import from abroad.
In response to a question from the journalists, he said, in fact, there is one thing to remember in the case of agricultural products, for example, if someone keeps potatoes in storage, if he rots, is there any profit for the trader? There is no profit. So what I think is that perishables are such that when the price goes up we have to see if there’s a supply problem… or suddenly for some reason the demand can go up.
The senior secretary of the ministry said, we have asked the political leaders of the area and other social organizations to involve the people in the area by holding frequent meetings with the product marketing committee and the consumer rights protection committee at the district and upazila levels; The reason is that everyone understands this situation. Now people have to buy products at much higher prices. So let us all play our part. Hopefully the price situation will improve by the end of December when the crops will arrive.
