History of Bangladesh and World Civilization এ্যাসাইনমেন্ট প্রশ্ন –

A written comparative discussion between the urban planning of Indus civilization and the urban planning of your own locality.

Sample  Answer –

Background of Indus Civilization-

This civilization was named as Indus Civilization as it was formed in the Indus River Basin. The Indus Valley Civilization is often referred to as the Hagi Civilization or Hara Civilization. The story of the discovery of this civilization is very interesting. There was a mound of earth in the town of Mohenjodaro in the district of Larkana in the Sindh province of Pakistan. People there used to call it a mound of dead people.

The people of the Archaeological Department, led by the Bengali archaeologist Rakhaldas Bandyopadhyay, started digging in the area thinking that there were wreckage of ships. Unexpectedly, Copper Age specimens came out. In 1920-1922, Dayaram Sahani’s efforts led to the discovery of ancient civilizations at Harappa in Montgomery District, west of the Punjab. The Department of Archeology, led by John Marshall, discovered many more specimens.

Geographical location-

The oldest Indus civilization of the subcontinent is spread over a vast area. Although most traces of this civilization have been discovered at Mohenjodaro and Harappa, the civilization was not confined to those two cities in the Indus Basin. Patterns of this civilization have been found in various places of Punjab, Sindh, Pakistan, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat of India. Historians believe that the Indus Valley Civilization developed over a vast area from the Punjab to the Arabian Sea.

Economic Status –

The economy of the Indus Valley Civilization was largely based on agriculture. Moreover, another big aspect of the economy was animal husbandry. In addition to agriculture and animal husbandry, they made considerable progress in pottery making, weaving, ornament making, stone work, and so on. In order to sell these high quality industrial products, the merchants there maintained commercial contacts with foreign countries. Traders had trade contacts with Afghanistan, Balochistan, Central Asia, Persia, Mesopotamia, South India, Gujarat.

Social status- In the era of Indus civilization, people lived in a socialized environment. The single family system was introduced there. In the era of Indus civilization, there was class division in the society. Not all people get the opportunity. Society was divided into rich and poor. Farmers lived in villages. Patterns have been found in separate places for the rich and workers in the city. They mainly used woolen cloth for clothing. The social system of the Indus Valley Civilization was matriarchal.

The urban planning similarities of my area with the city of Indus civilization (Mohenjodaro Harappa) are given below –

1 / Roads – Ancient Civilizations The city roads of the Indus Valley Civilization were paved. There were also drainage systems in this civilization. Small garbage drains from every house come together in a big big drain.

2 / Bathroom – Discovered in the city of Mohenjodaro, this huge bathroom is much like the current swimming pool.

3 / Granaries – Huge granaries have been found in Harappa for storing grain.

The contrast of the urban planning of my area with the city of Indus civilization (Mohenjodaro Harappa) is given below-

1 / Indus civilization houses were built with sun-baked bricks. Besides, the houses were one-storey and two-storey.

Almost all the houses in my area are made of brick.

2 / Place of construction of houses-

In the Indus Valley Civilization, almost all the houses were built on high mounds.

There are not many houses in our area.
